Fresh Endeavors - June 2003 East Harlem dwellers, take note there's a sexy new pampering outlet in your neighborhood. Praba, which means "light" or "radiance" in Sanskrit, is an Asian-Indian themed spa with four stations upstairs for threading hair removal and one silky-fabric-swathed downstairs area for massage and facials, including an Icee Hot variety specially for dark skin. I tried two traditional Indian offerings, eyebrow threading and henna. The threading - a method by which a taut string twists hair out by the roots - was less painful than plucking, took only a few minutes, cost only $6, and left me with graceful, tidy brows. Moreover, I liked the weird sizzling feeling as the thread ploughed through my hair. Having a hand painted with henna took fewer than ten minutes and resulted in a thick-lined, undulating design. Treatments, plus imports such as embroidered salwaars and painted-marble boxes, fulfill the vision of willowy Indian owner Anu Doddapaneni, who comes to the beauty business from a nonprofit. Everything, she says, is designed to create "beauty that radiates." - VS (click link for full article) |

Aromatherapy Facial - April 2004
For those New Yorkers who "don't go above 57th street" or "travel to the Upper East Side," the time has come to branch out, and Praba Salon is the reason. Just one year after opening, this Asian-Indian inspired beauty salon and spa (Praba is a Sanskrit word for light and radiance.) certainly knows what they're doing. Located on Third Avenue between 99th and 100th Street, Praba Salon is small and peaceful. This spa offers an array of services from threading to waxing; facials to massages; and special spa packages that are reasonably priced and well worth the trip uptown.

Beauty Book NYC 2006 & 2008
Calling Dr. Bombay: This Indian-inspired salon offers threading (eyebrows, $6), waxing (full leg, $30; bikini, $15 and up), facials, and massages. At Praba, beauty takes on Indian traditions - henna tattoos (a centuries-old custom of painting intricate designs on skin using plant dyes that last for about two weeks, $20 and up for hand vines, $90 and up for bridal designs) are available, while the sugar wax uses an all-natural Indian recipe ($2-$10 extra). The Honey Apple Mask ($25) is great for acne-prone skin and includes a 10-minute neck and shoulder massage; Foot Therapy ($40) soothes tired feet with oils, a foot scrub, massage, mask, and hot towel wrap; and Henna Hair Conditioning - using plant dyes - is $30-$45. For more Bollywood beauty, you should check out spa packages like the Sundari ($85), which features eyebrow threading, a facial with exfoliation mask, and a 30 minute full-body massage. |

Beauty Virgin - Get a Hair Free Tummy
One reader goes to Praba Salon in NYC to gently remove her stomach fuzz with an ancient process called sugaring. Sugaring gel is made of sugar, water, and lemon juice. The process dates back to ancient India, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. Skin stays hair-free for about two to four weeks. Hypoallergenic lotion can be applied if the area gets dry. Redness (if there is any) should disappear in less than an hour. “It wasn’t very painful - I’d say on a scale of one to ten, it was about a five. I’d rate regular waxing as a nine. I was very happy with my soft, smooth, hairless stomach.”

Praba-blee the Best Spa For Your Money
I immediately book the Nirvana Package at Praba, my favorite little Indian salon on the Upper, Upper East Side (that no-man’s land between UES proper & Spanish Harlem) muy pronto. I want the Nirvana Package; I need the Nirvana Package. Thank God for Praba. Their prices are unbelievable. I’d love to claim that my Kirtan practice first led me there; that I channeled the ghost of Maharaji through my Rudrakshas, but actually, I just stumbled upon it one day.
I’d like to propose that spa’ing is a rite of spring; every tradition in the world celebrates spring-cleaning in some manner (it’s one of the few things we can all agree on). I tend to go in for traditional Ayurvedic services in places that have yet to be stampeded by the hoards. I don’t want to make an appointment two weeks in advance just to get my lip zipped.
I previously experienced my first eyebrow threading at Praba and it was surprisingly painless, despite the horror stories I’d been fed. But this time, I need an entire system overhaul, a true spring cleaning; the works.

This is my 2nd time waxing here at Praba Salon, and I will definitely keep coming back. It’s really fast, more so than anywhere else I’ve been to, and very professional and thorough. The service is great!

The service is great, excellent! The results have been that my face is definitely clearer and feels more clean. Overall, the aromatherapy acne facial has helped my acne and my appearance. I have a more “glowy” complexion and the products do not irritate your skin - which is wonderful! I highly recommend it.

~ FACIALS ~ |
|
I have been getting facials done at Praba for the past 2 years. My skin’s needs change with the seasons and I sometimes get the Starter when things are pretty normal or in the winter, I go for the Hydrating. I really like that their facials help specific problems. And I love the prices and service!

I got my henna (mehndhi) done here for my wedding and it came out beautifully. Jigi is the best henna artist I’ve seen and is super fast at it too.
- Radha P. |

The henna tattoos I’ve gotten here have been better than any other place and make the artists in the Village or at street fairs look like kids doodling. I won’t go anywhere else!
- Marissa O. |

The skin bleaching has helped the dark spots and discoloration on my skin. It’s much more gentle than it might sound. My skin looks so much better and I’m much more confident that I look good.

Relax for Cheap - February 2010
I was directed to lean back in a well-worn spa chair as my therapist massaged my head and neck with warm oil (optional, for those opposed to greasy hair) and a heated towel. She asked several times if her pressure was too soft or hard. It was perfect, actually, and by the end, my stiff computer neck was a mere memory. Best part: My therapist didn’t try to sell me on additional services—even though I was so blissed out after my treatment, I would have bought a houseboat on the Gowanus if offered.
